Answer:

The man gains an overall profit of 2.85%.
Given:
A man buys three houses, second at double cost and double the price from third to second.
He sells the first and second house for a profit of 20% and incurs a loss of 10% on selling the third house.
To Find:
The overall gain/loss.
Solution:
Let us assume that the man bought the first house at cost of Rs. 100.
Then the cost at which he bought the second house = Rs. 200.
And the cost at which he bought the third house = Rs. 400.
We have been given that he gets 20% profit on each first and second house on selling them
The profit obtained on selling the first house = 20% of 100 = Rs 20
The profit obtained on selling the second house = 20% of 200 = Rs 40.
So the total profit = 20 + 40 = Rs. 60.
Loss incurred on the third house = 10% of 400 = Rs. 40.
∴ Overall gain = 60 - 40 = Rs. 20.
The percentage of gain = (20 *100)/(100 +200 +400) = 2.85%.
Hence, the man gains an overall profit of 2.85%
