His average speed in the total journey is 7 km/hr.

Given data :

The man covers a distance of 2 kilometres in the time of 20 minutes in the upstream.

The man covers a distance of 2 kilometres in the time of 15 minutes in the downstream.

• So,in the upstream :

He covers in 20 minutes = 2 km

He covers in 1 minute = 2/20 km

He covers in 60 minutes = 2×60/20 = 6 km

So,his speed in the upstream = 6km/hr

• Now,in the returning

He covers in 15 minutes = 2 km

He covers in 1 minute = 2/15 km

He covers in 60 minutes = 2×60/15 = 8 km

So, his speed in returning = 8 km/hr

• Now,we have to calculate the average speed of the entire trip by using the following formula :

Average speed = total speed/total round of trip = (6+8)/2 = 7 km/hr (answer)
