Step-by-step explanation:

When the current is 1.2 kmph, he goes to that place rowing at 6+1.2 = 7.2 kmph, and when he rows back his speed is 6–1.2 = 4.8 kmph. x = 72*48/1200 = 2.88 km. Check: Rowing downstream, time taken = 2.88/7.2 = 0.4 hour.
