A man can row at 10 kmph in still water . If it takes a total of 5hours for him to go to a place 24 km away & return ,then find the speed of the water current.

let the speed of the water current be x kmph,then,
the upstream speed (while going to the destination)= 10-x
down stream speed (while returning) = 10+x
we know that t=d/v (t=time,d=distance/displacement,v=velocity/speed)
so,the total time taken= [24/(10-x)]+[24/(10+x)]=5 kmph
=240-24x+240+24x/ 100-y² =5
=480/100-y² =5
480=500-5y²
hence,5y²=500-480=20
y²=4
y=2 kmph
