Answer:

Let distance traveled up hill =xkm

⇒ distance traveled down hill =xkm

Total time taken =4hr36min

=(4+6036)hrs

=(4+53)hrs=523hrs

We know that time =speedDistance

Total time = time taken  + time taken

walking up hill      walking down hill

523=2.5x+3.25x

⇒523=8.1253.25x+2.5x

⇒5186.87=5.75x

⇒x=6.5km

Solution :

Let x km is the distance travelled by the man walking up the hill.

Then,

x2.5+x3.5=43660...[As 4 hours 36 min = 4 36/60 hours]

⇒x2.5+x3.5=27660

⇒24x+18.40x=276

⇒42.4x=276

⇒x=6.50km

So, distance covered by him going uphill is 6.5 km and total distance going up and down is 13 km.
