A man claps his hand while standing at a certain distance from a building and gets to hear an echo. He moves 320 m closer to the building and repeats his action to find that he gets to hear the echo 2s earlier. Find the speed of sound in air.

Explanation:

Let’s assume that the student is standing at a distance x from the building.

The sound of his clap travels x metres to reach the building, and x metres again to reach the ears of the man, which leads to him hearing the echo.

So, total distance travelled by the waves (sound) is 2x. Time taken is 2s. Speed of sound is 340 m/s.

The data we have is:

Distance : 2x meters

Speed:340 m/s.

Time: 2s.

Distance=Speed × time

2x=340×2

x=340m

Therefore, the distance is 340m.
