The distance is 40 km.

Step-by-step explanation:

Consider the provided information.

We need to find the distance.

Use the formula: Speed=\dfrac{2v_1v_2}{v_1-v_2}

It is given that if he travel 3 km per hr  faster, he would have taken 40 min less. If he decrease his speed by 2 km per hr then he becomes 40 min late.

Speed=\dfrac{2(3)(2)}{3-2}=12

Hence, the speed is 12 km per hour.

Now use the formula: Distance =vt_1(1+\frac{v}{v_1})

Substitute the respective values in above formula.

Distance =12\times\frac{40}{60}(1+\frac{12}{3})

Distance =8(1+4)

Distance =40

Hence, the distance is 40 km.
