Given :

The speed with man covers a certain distance = x km/hr

The speed with which he came back = y km/hr

The time taken by the man to go and come back = t hrs

To Find :

The magnitude of distance  = ?

Solution :

Let the distance be equal to = d

Since , the total time in going and coming back is = t , so :

\frac{d}{x} + \frac{d}{y} = t

Or, \frac{dy + dx }{xy } = t

Or , d (x+y) = xyt

Or ,d =\frac{xyt}{x+y} km

Hence , the magnitude of distance is d = \frac{xyt}{x+y} km .
