Let the total distance be x km.Then

Distance covred=x/2 km
Speed of covering distsnce=6km/hr

Time taen=Distance/Speed
=(x/2)/6=x/12 hr

Distance covered=x/2km
Speed of covering the distance=3km/hr

Time taken=(x/2)/3=x/6 hr

Now,
Total distance=x km

Total time taken=x/12+x/6
=3x/12 hr= x/4 hr

Average speed=total distance/total time taken
=x/(x/4) km/hr
=4 km/hr
