Let, total distance covered by the man is X

According to the question, X/5 is covered by foot, 2X/3 is covered by car and the rest 4 km travelled by taxi.

Therefore,

X/5 + 2X/3 + 4 = X

Or, (3X + 10X)/15 = X - 4

Or, 13X = 15X - 60

Or, 2X = 60

Or, X = 30

Hence, he traveled a total distance of 30 km.
