he gave 5/12 of his money to his son,

so remaining amount is x-(5x/12)= 7x/12,

given that,

3/7 th of the remaining amount was given to her daughter,

that is (3/7)*(7x/12)= x/4,

also given that,

remaining amount was given to his wife which is equal to Rs.8700/-

i.e,

x-[(5x/12)+x/4 ]= 8700,

=> x-(2x/3) = 8700,

=> x= 26100.

therefore,total amount is Rs.26100/-
