A man goes 15m towards west and then 20m towards south .find the distance between his starting point and the terminal point

15 m west

20 m south

south is perpendicular to west

so we can apply Pythagoras theorem to find magnitude of distance between starting point and terminal point

 {distance}^{2} = {15}^{2} + {20}^{2} \\ \\ {distance}^{2} = 225 + 400 \\ \\ {distance}^{2} = 625 \\ \\ {distance}^{2} = {25}^{2} \\ \\ distance = 25

man is 25 m southwest from original
