Distance travelled WEST = 35m

Distance travelled NORTH = 12m

Let distance from starting point be x.

35^2 + 12^2 = x^2(pythagoras theorem)

= 1225 + 144 = x^2

= 1369 = x^2

= x = square root of 1369

= 37

therefore, he is 37m away from the starting point.
