Since, the path taken by the man is in right angle triangle as shown in the attached image. The shortest distance between point 'A' and point 'C' is the 'HYPOTENUSE' itself.

Therefore, by the Pythagoras theorem

$Hypotenuse^2 = Side_1^2+Side_2^2$

from the given data,

$Side_1 = 3Km\\Side_2 = 4Km$

let, Hypotenuse = x

Now,  

$x^2 = 3^2+4^2\\x^2 = 9+16\\x^2 = 25\\x = 5Km$
