 A man goes up in a uniformly accelerating lift. he returns downward with the lift accelerating at the same rate. The ratio of apparent weights in the two cases is 2:1. What is the acceleration of the lift?

apparent weight is the weight measured in the lift. It is the force exerted by a man on the floor. Let the lift be accelerating up or down with a value a m/sec². Let the mass of a person be m in the lift.

While going upward, the apparent weight is = Wu = m (g+a)
While going down, apparent weight = Wd = m (g -a )

Ratio = m (g+a) / m (g-a)  = (g+a)/(g-a) = 2:1

g+a = 2g -2a        => g = 3a  a = g/3
