Answer:

Let total money initially be x rupees.

So Eldest son got 50% of x

= 0.5x

So Remaining = x-0.5x = 0.5x

So Youngest son got 40% of remaining money

= 0.4(0.5x)

= 0.2x

so Remaining = 0.5x-0.2x = 0.3x

So Poor boy got 20% of remaining money

= 0.2(0.3x)

= 0.06x

so Remaining = 0.3x-0.06x = 0.24x

But given that remaining = 3600 rupees = 0.24x

So x = 3600/0.24 = 15000 rupees

Total sum = Rs. 15,000.

Given:

A man had a certain sum of money. He gave 50% of it to his eldest son,40% of the remaining to his youngest son and 20% of the remaining for poor boy of a school. Still he has ₹3600 with him.

To find:

Find the total sum

Solution;

Let the total sum be x,

Money given to eldest son = 50% of total sum = 50% of x = 50/100 * x = 1/2 *x = x/2

Now, we have to calculate remaining amount as youngest son is given 40% of remaining sum

Remaining sum = x - x/2 = (2x-x)/2 = x/2

Money given to youngest son = 40% of x/2

= 40/100 * x/2

= 2/5 * x/2

= x/5

Remaining = x/2 - x/5 = (5x-2x)/10 = 3x/10

Now, we have to calculate amount given to poor boy which is 20% of 3x/10

= 20/100 * 3x/10 = 1/5 * 3x/10 = 3x/50

Total money spent = money given to eldest son + money given to youngest son + money given to poor boy

= x/2 + x/5 + 3x/50

= (25x + 10x + 3x)/50

= 38x/50

Remaining amount = total amount - money spent

3600 = x - 38x/50

3600 = (50x-38x)/50

3600 = 12x/50

12x = 3600*50

12x = 180000

x = 180000/12

x= Rs. 15000

His total sum is Rs. 15,000.
