let the no of cows be x

no of hens be y

we know that cow has 4 legs and hen has 2 legs but both the animals have only one head.

step2

total no of heads given 48

total no of heads in variable form is x+y

so x+y=48

one cow has 4 legs

total x cows then total no of cow legs are4×x i.e 4x similarly hens total no of hen legs are 2y

then total no of legs 4x+2y in variable form

given total no of legs are 140

step3

the two equations are x+y=48

4x+2y=140

on solving both equations we get x=22, y=26
