The person first goes 5km south, 4 km west and then 2 km north.

So it forms a right angled triangle in which hypotenuse will be displacement and base and altitude are
5-2 = 3km
And 4km.

Hypo^2 = base^2 + altitude^2
Hypo^2 = 3^2+4^2
Hypo^2 = 9+16
Hypo^2 = 25
Hypotenuse = 5km

Therefore displacement is 5 km.

Hope you understand.
