A man is 24yrs older than his son. 12yrs ago, he was 5 times as old as his son. Find the present ages of both.

Let the son's present age be x years. Then, man's present age = (x + 24) years
=> (x + 24) + 5 = 5(x + 5)
=> x + 29 = 5x + 20
Son, x = 9

Let the man's age be x years ,
and the age of his son be y years ;
According to the question
x = y+24 -----–-(1)
(x-12) = 5×(y-12)
x-12 = 5y-60
x = 5y-48 ------(2)
On comparing equation (1) & (2), we get ;
y+24 = 5y-48
5y-y = 24+48
4y = 72
y = 18
x = y+24
x = 18+24
x = 42
________________
Hence the present age of the man is 42 years and that of his son is 18 years
and the age of his son be y years ;
