Let the years after which the son's age becomes the half of the father's, be x

So, after x years, age of father = 42 + x

After x years, the age of the son would be 12 + x

Now, given that after x years, the age of son would be half, that is 1/2 of the father's age.

 = > \frac{1}{2} (42 + x) = 12 + x

 = > \frac{42}{2} + \frac{x}{2} = 12 + x \\ \\ = > 21 + \frac{x}{2} = 12 + x \\ \\ = > 21 - 12 = x - \frac{x}{2} \\ \\ = > 9 = \frac{x}{2} \\ \\ = > x = 9 \times 2 \\ = > x = 18

Hence, after 18 years, the age of son would become the half of the age of father.

So after 18 years, age of son = 12 + 18

= 30

After 18 years, age of father = 42 + 18

= 60

Now, since 30 = half of 60, so the answer is correct.
