A man is asked to dig 20 small holes and 5 big holes. He takes about 4 times as much time to dig a big hole as he takes to dig a small hole. If he completed the job in exactly 1 hour, how many minutes did it take him to dig each big hole?

Calculate all the big holes in term of small holes:

1 big hole = 4 small holes

5 big holes = 4 x 5 = 20 small holes

Find the total number of small holes:

20 small holes + 5 big holes = 20 + 20 = 40 small holes

Calculate time to dig one small hole:

40 small holes = 1 hour

40 small holes = 60 mins

1 small hole = 60 ÷ 40 = 1.5 min

Find time needed to dig one big hole:

1 big hole = 4 small holes

1 big hole = 4 x 1.5 min = 6 mins

Answer: It takes 6 mins to dig 1 big hole.
