A man is carrying a spring balance in which a stone is suspended which weighs 5N. What happens to its weight if the spring balance is released and allowed to fall freely?

When the stone is suspended from the hook of the balance, the spring is stretched and has tension equal to the weight = 5 kg wt.

When the balance and hence stone are falling freely under gravitation,  the spring experiences no force from the stone.  The stone is not pulled up by the spring balance.....  as  Tension T =  mg - ma    and  a  = g.

hence the spring balance will show  0 weight and the spring is not extended or compressed.
