man's age = 5x years

after 10 years

son's age = x + 10
man's age = 5x + 10

given,

the man will be 3 times as old as his son after 10 yrs

in order to balance the equation,


we have ,


3 ( x + 10 ) = 5x + 10

3x + 30 = 5x + 10

30 - 10 = 5x - 3x

2x = 20

$x = \frac{20}{2}$

x = 10

so,

son's age = x = 10 years

man's age = 5x = 5 × 10 = 50 years.
