Given data : A man is going from his office to his house. He goes 15 m due West and then 8 m due North.

Solution : Now according to figure, let C be the starting point of the man, when man walks 15 m towards West means he moves from C to B to and when he moves 8 m towards North means he moves from B to A.

When we connect the starting point and the end point it looks like a right angled triangle. ∆ ABC

Now a/c to figure and question, we need to find hypotenuse.

Here,

  • distance BA = 8 m
  • distance CB = 15 m
  • distance AC = hypotenuse = ?

Now, by Pythagoras theorem

⟹ (hypo)² = (dist. BA)² + ( dist. CB)²

⟹ (AC)² = (8)² + (15)²

⟹ (AC)² = 64 + 225

⟹ (AC)² = 289

⟹ AC = √289

⟹ AC = 17 m

Answer : Hence, the shortest distance between starting and the end point is 17 m.

(option d : 17 m)

{ More info :

  • A hypotenuse is the longest side of a right angled triangle.
  • The length of the hypotenuse can be found using the Pythagorean theorem.
  • a² + b² = c²
  • Where c represents the length of the hypotenuse and a and b the lengths of the triangle's other two sides.}
