Answer:

Suppose the two cliffs are A and B which are at the distances x and y from the man respectively.

Consider that the echo of 1.5 sec and 2.5 sec are produced by are produced by cliff A and B.

2x = 340 x 1.5

x = 255 m

2y = 340 x 2.5

y = 425 m

Distance between the cliff = x + y = 680 m

The third echo will be heard after 1.5 sec from the time when the second echo is heard.

Answer: Distance = Speed x time

1) Distance from first hill - 'x'

-> speed = 340 m/s

-> time = 0.3 s

-> Distance travelled by sound = 2x

2x = 340 x 0.3

2x = 102

x = 102/2

x = 51

2) Distance from second hill - 'y'

-> speed = 340 m/s

-> time = 0.5 s

-> distance travelled by sound = 2y

2y = 340 x 0.5

2y = 170

y = 170/2

y = 85

∴ Distance between the 2 hills = x + y

= 51 + 85

= 136 m

Explanation:

The distance from man to the two hills are calculated first and then added to find the total distance between the two hills.
