Let the present age of the son = x years

∴ the present age of the father = 2x years

20 years ago the father's age was 4 times the age of the son

⇒2x – 20 = 4(x – 20)

⇒ 2x – 20 = 4x – 80

⇒ 2x = 60

⇒ x = 60/2 = 30 years

∴ the present age of the son is 30 years and the present age of the father is 60 years
