When the salivary glands do not produce enough saliva to keep the mouth moist, then there are many biological activities that get affected by it.

A 'dry mouth' or Xerostomia is caused which does not have any saliva. The primary symptoms of dry mouth are - a dry and sticky feeling in the mouth, cracked lips especially at the corners, dry tongue, stringy saliva (if present), and burning sensation or pain in the tongue and mouth.

Since saliva is needed for activities like chewing, talking, tasting, and swallowing, all these activities also get affected and they become difficult when there is a dry mouth.

Also, saliva helps in maintaining the right amount of bacteria in the mouth. Without the saliva, these bacteria tend to grow rapidly and cause mouth sores, dental problems, gum diseases, thrush, cavities, and other oral and dental infections.

Frequent rinsing of mouth with water and saliva substitutes like mouth rinses that contain carmellose, hyetellose, and hyprolose could help to a certain extent.
