Let us consider originally the man has G number of gems.

He has lost 45% of total number of gems,

that means = 45% of G

After 45% lost still he has 198 gems with him.

∴( G - 45% of G ) = 198 ( according to the question )

( 100 G - 45 G)  / 100= 198

\frac{55G }{100} = 198

55G = 198 × 100

G =( 198 × 100) ÷ 55

G = 19800 ÷ 55

G= \frac{19800}{55} = 360

∴ Originally the man had 360 gems.

Ans :- The man had total 360 gems.
