A man, M, positions himself on a river bank as in the diagram below, so he can observe two poles A and B of equal height on the opposite bank of the river. He finds the angle of elevation to the top of the pole is 22 , and the angle of elevation to the top of Pole B is 19°. Show how he could use the facts to determine the width of the river, if he knows A and B are 100m apart.

Answer:

angle A = 22 degrees right?

angle B = 19 degrees?

Then through the Pythagorean Law, the third angle C = 180-(A+B) = 139

However, the quickest way to solve the distance of the bank is to drop an altitude. You'll have a 19o 90o 71o triangle. From there you use you trigonometric formulas to find side a (opposite 19o), b, and c.

They do the same for the 22o angle.

You'll have to get a proportion for both sides of the 100m bank to figure out how big the triangle actually is.
