A man of height 1.8 m is standing 5 m away from a lamp post and observes that the length of his shadow is 1.5 m . Find the height of the lamp post.

Make a diagram of the arrangement.

From figure:

Let the height of lamp post be x.

Let the height of the man be CD.

Let the length of the shadow be DE.

Given, CD = 1.8 m, AD = 5 m, DE = 1.5 m.


From Δ CDE:

⇒ tan E = CD/DE

             = 1.8/1.5

             = 18/15

             = 6/5.



From Δ BAE,

⇒ tan E = AB/AE

⇒ 6/5 = x/(5 + 1.5)

⇒ 6/5 = x/6.5

⇒ 6 * 6.5 = 5x

⇒ 39 = 5x

⇒ x = 39/5

⇒ x = 7.8 m.


Therefore, the height of the lamp post = 7.8 m.
