A man or a woman makes a direct contact with society in two ways: as a member of some
familiar, professional or religious group or as a member of crowd. Groups are capable of being as
moral and intelligent as the individuals who form them. A crowd that is chaotic has no purpose of its
own and is capable of anything except intelligent action and realistic thinking. Assembled in crowd,
people lose their power of reasoning and their capacity of moral choice. Their suggestibility is
increased to the point where they cease to have any judgment or will of their own. They became very
excitable, and may lose all sense of individuals or collective responsibility. They are subject to sudden
excesses of rage, enthusiasm and panic. In a word, a man in a crowd behaves as though he was
swallowed a large dose of some powerful intoxicant. He is victim of what I have called of 'herd-
poisoning: Herd - poison is an active, extravagant drug. The crowd intoxicated individuals escapes
from responsibility, intelligence and morality into a kind of frantic, animal mindlessness

The summary for the given passage is as follows:-

The true face of society

Men and women make direct contact with society by either being a member of some familiar, professional or religious group where they are rational both as a part of group and individually, or by being a member of the crowd without any purpose or sensibility and creating only chaos. Their sense of judgement and individuality is lost and they become victims to rage and panic. They seem intoxicated on herd-poison where they escape from responsibility and morality and descend towards animal frantic behaviour.
