debt paid = 2 /5 of his debt

.
= 2/ 5 of x = ₹ 2x/ 5

.
remaining money to pay = ₹240

.

total amount = debt paid + remaining money

.
x = ( 2x / 5 ) + 240

.
x - ( 2x/ 5 ) = 240

.
5x - 2x = 1200

.
3x = 1200 => x = 400
