Given:

A man planted two sticks of length 1 meter at Place A and Place B which are 800 Km apart from each other. At 12:00 noon, at Place A, the length of shadow is 12.6 cm and at Place B, there is zero shadow.

To Find:

Find the circumference of the Earth?

Solution:

It is given that - A man planted two sticks of length 1m at Place A and Place B which are 800 Km apart from each other. At 12:00 noon, at Place A, the length of shadow is 12.6 cm and at Place B, there is zero shadow.

⇒ L = distance between these two sticks(each of 1m length) = 800 km , shadow for 2nd stick is 12.6cm  = 0.126 m .

Now, firstly we measure angle A between 2nd stick and its shadow ;

\[\begin{gathered}  \tan \theta  = \frac{{0.126}}{1} \hfill \\  \theta  = {\tan ^{ - 1}}\left( {\frac{{0.126}}{1}} \right) \hfill \\  \theta  = {7.18^ \circ } \hfill \\ \end{gathered} \]

therefore, to calculate circumference, C of earth we have,

\[\begin{gathered}  \frac{L}{C} = \frac{{{{7.18}^ \circ }}}{{{{360}^ \circ }}} \hfill \\  C = \frac{{L \times {{360}^ \circ }}}{{{{7.18}^ \circ }}} = \frac{{800 \times {{360}^ \circ }}}{{{{7.18}^ \circ }}} \hfill \\  C = 40111.42 \hfill \\ \end{gathered} \]

Hence, circumference of the earth is 40111.42 km.
