Loss of ₹1.89/pen

C.P. of 8 pens = ₹9

C.P. of 1 pen = 9/8

S.P. of 9 pens = ₹8

S.P. of 1 pen = 8/9

CP > SP

Therefore, he is at loss

Loss = CP - SP

        = 81 - 64/9

        = 17/9 =  ₹1.89/pen (approx.)
