A man pushed his car to bring it to the side of road as it had stalled in the middle of the road. He experienced that although he has to push with all his might initially to move the car, the push required to keep the car rolling was smaller, once the car started rolling. Explain.

This question is related to Frictional Force.

Friction is the force that opposes motion between any surfaces that are in contact with each other.

There are 4 types of friction:

  • Static friction.
  • Sliding friction.
  • Rolling friction.
  • Fluid friction.

In this question,

The type of friction is Rolling Friction.

When an object rolls over the surface of another object, the resistance to its motion is called rolling friction. Rolling friction is caused by the rubbing of the surfaces together

Coming back to Question,

We have to apply more force to move the heavier object from its position.

If the mass increases, the force of friction increases.

When the car started moving the friction becomes the rolling friction.

So the forced applied will be less then previous one. So to keep the car balanced and in motion we only need apply lesser force.

Answer:

Initially, when they push the car static friction acts and when it start moving kinetic friction was acting so since coefficient of kinetic friction is less then static friction.

Hence, they felt easier to push the car once it star moving.
