Step-by-step explanation:

A man read 3/8 of the book

So remaining pages = 1 - 3/8 = (8-3)/8 = 5/8

on the second day he read 4/5 of the remainder

4/5 * 5/8 = 4/8

After reading second day ,remaining pages =1st day remaining pages - second day completed pages

So 5/8 - 4/8 = 1/8

After second day unread pages are 40

So 1/8 = 40 which means 1 part of 8 parts is equal to 40

Totally there are 8 parts ( denominator fraction part which is 8)

1 part = 40

8 parts = 8×40

= 320

Totally there are 320 pages in the book
