A man read 3 upon 8 of book on first day and 4 upon 5 of book on second day still 40 pages were unread . What is the total number of pages

SIf 3/8 of the book were read the first day, then 5/8 remained.

 

4/5 of 5/8 = 4/5 * 5/8 = 4/8

 

So now 3/8 + 4/8 = 7/8 have been read.

 

The 30 pages that remain must be 1/8 of the total.

 

So if p is the total number of pages:

 

p/8 = 30

 

p = 240 pages
