A man reads 3/8 of a book on a day and 4/5 of the remainder on the second day. If the number of pages still unread are 40, then how many pages did the book contain. ​

Answer:

Let the total no. of pages the book has be x

Book red by a man on 1st day = 3/8 of x = 3x/8

Remaining = x-3x/8 = 8x-3x/8 = 5x/8

Part of book red on 2nd day = 4/5 of (5x/8)

= 20x/40 = x/2

Pages unread = 40.

ACCORDING TO QUESTION:-

3x/8 + x/2 + 40 = x

=> 3x+4x/8 - x = -40

=> 7x/8 - x = -40

=> 7x-8x/8 = -40

=> -x/8 = -40

=> -x = -40×8

=> x = 320.

Total no. of pages = x = 320.
