ANSWER:

The rate of flow of the stream is 1.6 km/hr

Step-by-step explanation:

Given: The man rowed upstream for 4 hours and back in 2hours. The rate of rowing was 5 km/hr

To find The rate of flow of the stream

Solution:

The man rowed upstream for 4 hours

The man rowed downstream for 2 hours

Velocity =\frac{Distance}{time}

Time = \frac{Displacement}{velocity}

The displacement of going upstream and downstream is the same.

Time ∝ \frac{1}{velocity}

Let x be the velocity of the stream

The velocity of going upstream will be 5-x

The velocity of going downstream will be 5+x

\frac{4}{2} = \frac{5+x}{5-x}

2( 5 -x) = 5 + x

10 - 2x = 5 +x

3x = 5

x = 1.6 km/hr

Velocity denotes the speed of something in a given direction.

Time denotes the time denoted for the journey.

Displacement denotes the action of moving something or displacing something from its place.

Therefore, the rate of flow of the stream will be 1.6 km/hr
