Yes he is doing some work. To rowing a boat upstream, the man applies some force against the stream. The direction of the stream is downward while the direction of boat is upward. So there is relative motion between the downstream and boat even though the man is at rest.

Yes, the man is doing work.

•Upstream refers to direction against the stream.

•This means river is flowing downward.

•The person is rowing upward.

•This causes him to do work.

•Formula for calculation of work in upstream speed is given by -

•Let us assume the speed of boat in still water to be u km/hr and the speed of the stream to be v km/hr, then formula will be given by -

•Speed downstream = (u + v) km/hr.

•Speed upstream = (u - v) km/hr.

•With respect to shore, since the person covers distance, hence yes he is found work.

•As, work is defined as product of force and distance.
