A man rows a boat with a speed of 18 km/hr in north-west direction. The shoreline makes an angle
of a south of west. Obtain the component of the velocity of the boat along the shoreline.

We have to find a component of the velocity along the shoreline, or parallel to the river.

In the figure, we can clearly see that the velocity makes an angle of (45 + 15) = 60° with the river. So, this component will be the Cos Ф = 18 cos 60

= 18 × 12

= 9 km/h [Answer]
