Concept:

If the age of a person is 'a', then after 'x' years, the person's age will be (a + x), and 'x' years in the past, the age would have been (x - a) years.

Given:

Man's age 5 years ago equals his wife's present age.

And,

Son's age is 1/8th of his wife's present age.

Also,

Son's age = 5 years

Find:

We are asked to find the sum of the ages of the three family members.

Solution:

Let,

Wife's age = a,

Man's age = b

So,

According to the question,

Man's age 5 years ago equals his wife's present age,

i.e.

b - 5 = a     .....(i),

Now,

Son's age is 1/8th of his wife's present age,

i.e.

Son's age = (1/8) × a

Also,

Son's age = 5 years,

So,

(1/8) × a = 5

We get,

a = 40 years,

Putting in equation (i),

We get,

b - 5 = 40

i.e.

b = 45,

So,

The sum of the ages of the all family members = 45 + 40 + 5 = 90 years.

Hence, the sum of the ages of the three family members is 90 years.
