A man sold 1/2 of his land. He gave 1/2 of the remaining portion to his son and 1/3 of the remaining to his daughter. What fraction of his land is left with him?

After selling his land he had 12 of the land left (in the beginning he had 1 and he gave 12 so 1−12=12 ).

Now of this half he gave half to his son. So how much did his son got from the original land? 14 ( 12⋅12=14 ) that leaves himself with 14 and from this he gave 13 to his daughter so she got 112 ( 14⋅13 ) of the original land and now he has 14−112=312−112=212=16 .

He has 16 of his land left.

Answer

Sold 1 / 2 left with 1/2

Son 1/2 of 1/2= 1 /4

Daughter 1/3 of 1/2 = 1/6

work out how much he has sold or given away

1/2 +1/4+1/6 can also be shown as 6/12+3/12+2/12 which =11/12 given away

So he had 1/12 left from the original amount

To add or subtract fractions make the bottom numbers the same ie

1/2 can be shown as 2/4, 3/6 , 6/12

1/4 can be shown as 2/8, 3/12

1/6 as 2/12

ie multiply the top number by the same amount as the bottom number

He has 1/6 of his land left.
