Let x = no.

Of tables and y = no.

Of chairs here,

12 tables and chairs were bought.

So, x+y = 12

...(1) and cost of 1 table is 50

so cost of x tables is 50x similarily cost of y chairs is 40y hence,

50x + 40y = 500 ...

(2) solving both the equations

we get, x = 2 and y = 10 hence 2:10 = 1:5
