Answer:

850 m

Explanation:

Let the distance between the first cliff and the man be d and distance between the second cliff and the man be D. (d < D)

 Distance between the cliff = d + D

As we know, speed = distance/time

 For 1st cliff and man:  as the sound takes 2 seconds to go and return, it taken 2/2 = 1 seconds to cover that distance.

⇒ speed = distance/time

⇒ 340 = d/1

⇒ 340 = d

 For 2nd cliff and man: similarly as that case 1, time = 3/2 = 1.5

⇒ speed = distance/time

⇒ 340 = D/1.5

⇒ 340*1.5 = D     ⇒ 510 = d

 Distance between the cliff = d + D

                             = 340 + 510

                             = 850  m

Answer:

Given :-

  • A man standing between two vertical cliffs fires a gun and hears it's first echo after 2 seconds and next echo 3 seconds later.
  • It's velocity of sound in air is 340 m/h.

To Find :-

  • What is the distance between two cliffs.

Formula Used :

➲ Speed = Distance/Time

Solution :-

Let, the distance between the first cliffs and man be d

And, similarly the distance between the cliffs and man be D

Now, for the first case of the first cliffs and man :

Time taken :

2/2

1 seconds

Given :

  • Speed = 340 m/h
  • Time = 1 seconds

According to the question by using the formula we get,

Speed = Distance/Time

340 = d/1

340 × 1 = d

340 = d

d = 340 m

Again, for the second case of the second cliff and man :

Time taken :

3/2

1.5 seconds

Given :

  • Speed = 340 m/h
  • Time = 1.5 seconds

According to the question by using the formula we get,

Speed = Distance/Time

340 = D/1.5

340 × 1.5 = D

340 × 15/10 = D

5100/10 = D

510 = D

D = 510 m

Now, we have to find the distance between two cliffs :

Then we know that :

Distance between two cliffs = d + D

Given :

  • d = 340 m
  • D = 510 m

According to the question by using the formula we get,

Distance between two cliffs = d + D

Distance between two cliffs = 340 m + 510 m

Distance between two cliffs = 850 m

The distance between the two cliffs is 850 m.
