Solution:

Whether the man sees the stone in its actual position or at a raised (apparent) position , it simply depends upon his viewing.

When the man is looking at the rock from vertically up:

Applying Snell's Law:

 \therefore \:  \mu \sin(i)  =  1 \times   \sin(r)

 \implies \:  \mu \sin( {0}^{ \circ} )  =  1 \times   \sin(r)

 \implies \:  \mu  \times 0 =  1 \times   \sin(r)

 \implies \:  \sin(r)  = 0

 \implies \: r =  {0}^{ \circ}

So, rays from the rock don't undergo any deviation at the water-air interface. Hence, the man will see the rock at its actual position.

When the man looks at the rock from a different angle:

  • Refer to diagram.

  • The light rays originating from the rock will deviate away from the normal , while getting refracted at the water-air interface.

  • When the refracted ray is extended backwards, it produces an image of the rock at a higher position.

  • The observer perceives this image as the original object , and the man watches the rock at a higher apparent depth.
