Man is 5  km from the starting point

Given:

A man starts from a point and moves 3 km north

Turns to west and goes 2 km

Turns north and walks 1 km

Moves 5 km towards east

To Find:

Distance from the starting point

Solution:

         North

West              East

         South

A man starts from a point and moves 3 km north

North = 3 km

turns to west and goes 2 km.

West = 2 km => East = - 2 km

He turns north and walks 1 km

North = 1 km

moves 5 km towards east

East = 5 km

Total North = 3 + 1 = 4 km

Total East = -2 + 5 = 3 km

As north and east are perpendicular to each other hence using Pythagorean theorem:

Total Distance = √4² + 3²  = 5 km

He is 5  km from the starting point
