A Man suffered severe injury in his ribs.He experienced pain during inhalation. What could be the reason?

His ribs have been broken. The bones might poke his lungs during respiration.

The ribs might have a hairlike crack which may have a pain... had an experience... it can also be that there is internal swelling in that area...
