A man swimming in a stream which flows 1.5 km/hr finds that in a given time he can swim twice as far with the stream as he can against it. At what rate does he swim?​

Given,

The rate at stream flows  = 1.5km/h

To Find,

The swimmer speed.

Solution,

Let's take swimmer speed  =x km/h.

The time is taken by the swimmer = t

The speed of the stream = 1.5km/h

The speed when swimming with the stream = x+1.5 km/h

The distance covered when swimming with the stream D₁= (x+1.5)t

The speed when swimming against the stream = x -1.5

The distance covered when swimming against the stream D₂= (x-1.5)t

The swimmer swims twice when swimming against the stream

Therefore,

D₁ = 2D₂

(x+1.5)t = 2((x-1.5)t)

x+1.5 = 2x- 3

x = 4.5 km/h

4.5km/h is the speed of the swimmer.
