Answer

  • Average velocity of the man = 0 m/s
  • Average speed of the man = 1 m/s

Explanation

Given:-

  • Width of the pool = 300 m
  • Distance covered by the man in swimming from one end to other and back along the same path = 600 m
  • Time taken to cover 600 m = 10 min

To find:-

  • Average speed and velocity of the man for the entire journey =?

Formula required:-

  • Formula for average velocity

Average velocity = total displacement / total time taken

  • Formula for average speed

Average speed = total distance covered / total time taken

Solution:-

On swimming from one end of the pool to the other, and returning back along the same path

  • total displacement = zero
  • total distance covered = 600 m  (given)
  • total time taken by the swimmer = 10 min = 10 × 60 sec = 600 sec

So, Using formulae

→ The average velocity of man = total displacement / total time taken = 0 / 600 = 0 m/s

and

→ The average speed of man = total distance covered / total time taken = 600 / 600 = 1 m/s

Therefore,

  • Average velocity of the man = 0 m/s
  • Average speed of the man = 1 m/s.

\Large\bf{\color{indigo}GiVeN,} \\

  • Width of a swimming pool is 300 m.

  • A man covers 600 m in 10 minutes by swimming from one end to other & back along the same path.

\bf\blue{We\:know\:that,} \\

\red\bigstar\:\:\bf{\color{peru}Average\:Speed\:=\:\dfrac{Total\:distance}{Total\:time}\:} \\

Here total distance covered by man is 600 m. Because he swims from one end to other & returns to the starting point, means he covered 2 times the width of swimming pool in 10 minutes.

  • Total distance = 600 m

  • Total time = 10 min. = 10 × 60 = 600 s

:\implies\:\:\bf{Average\:Speed\:=\:\dfrac{600}{600}\:} \\

:\implies\:\:\bf\purple{Average\:Speed\:=\:1\:m/s\:} \\

\Large\bold\therefore Average speed of the man is 1 m/s.

\bf\pink{Again\:we\:know\:that,} \\

\green\bigstar\:\:\bf{\color{olive}Average\:Velocity\:=\:\dfrac{Total\:displacement}{Total\:time}\:} \\

Here total displacement of the man is 0 m. Because the point from where he started his swim, at the same point his journey end, Means first he swims 300 m and returns back on the same path in 10 minutes.

  • Total displacement = 0 m

  • Total time = 10 min. = 600 s

:\implies\:\:\bf{Average\:Velocity\:=\:\dfrac{0}{600}\:} \\

:\implies\:\:\bf\orange{Average\:Velocity\:=\:0\:m/s\:} \\

\Large\bold\therefore Average velocity of the man is 0 m/s.
